Black Cat Farm

Flowers are for Everyday

About Our Farm

Here at Black Cat Farm we are inspired by nature.  What started out as a simple idea to keep one hive of bees and expand our garden to help sustain them, has turned into a joy and passion.  We love nature and always strive to work with it and for it.  Our aim is to be sustainable and organic on our flower farm and in our apiary.  Nature comes first for us– it is a beautiful and precious thing.

At our farm stand, we offer beautiful seasonal cut flowers, and delicious fresh honey.  Everything is grown and cared for, right here on our farm.  We start with seeds and bulbs to grow our flowers and keep five beehives on our property.  We also offer CSA shares in both flowers and honeybee products.  We want to share our love of nature with you and allow flowers and honey to be everyday experiences.

I remember as a child, working in the garden with my mom.  I loved visiting garden centers, watching my mom pick out the perfect plant, being outside in the dirt, and helping create something beautiful.  When my parents put a new garden in our backyard, I felt honored to be given an area of my own to plant whatever I wanted.  It was, in essence, my first garden.  I loved choosing and planting my favorite flowers in that small, special patch.  That first garden, and all the time I spent outside with my mom, planted a love of growing and gardening deep in my heart.

When my husband, Curtis, and I bought our first home, I couldn’t wait to get started on the garden.  We quickly started adding to the borders, taking up lawn and planting more and more flowers.  We soon had a garden filled with flowers and beauty.  I wanted to find a way to share that beauty and the joy that flowers gave to me.  Then, I discovered Erin Benzakein’s book, Floret Farm’s Cut Flower Garden.  Through learning about Floret, and with SO much encouragement from Curtis, I decided to give flower farming a try.

I feel so blessed to be able to grow, work with, and share something as beautiful as flowers.  When I started out on this adventure I wanted to help people realize that flowers are for everyday, not just special occasions.  Flowers have the power to lift and feed the soul.  It is my hope that with our small farm, we can bring joy to all of those who share in the beauty of our flowers.

Curtis

Curtis is our resident beekeeper and my biggest support.  Black Cat Farm wouldn’t exist without him.  He took my crazy ideas and made them a reality and is always encouraging me to try out all the new plans that I come up with.
While we both work and care for the hives, Curtis is the passionate beekeeper of our farm.  He loves our bees.  He is great at working the hives and is always excited for honey season to start.  If you ever have a question about honeybees, he is the one to ask.  He enjoys reading books and learning about honeybees and our native bee species.  His love and enthusiasm for bees and nature is infectious and helps to guide all our decisions here on the farm.
